Itinerary description
This walk was drastically changed due to the soca river bridge being closed.
Starting in Kobarid (plentiful parking available), walk up to the Italian ossuary war monument, and then continue on the well-marked historic path. Ordinarily you can walk then across a bridge over the magnificent milky turquoise Soča river, however it was impassable on the day I went. I re-joined the trail which goes up the side of the mountain to get to the Italian defence trenches from the Great War. Very interesting, and a great view of the mountains and the river far below - clearly a highly defensible position for an army. I went up some steep stairs (which was dangerous due to the road works in the pass making rockfalls possible), and then the trail leads to Tonovcov Grad archaeological ruins atop a hill with a fantastic view of the Soca valley and Kobarid. From there you can join a clear path all the way back to the Italian war memorial and Kobarid.
A bit a of strange hike because of many closed and damaged paths, so check latest before attempting this one. I’m sure soon the bridge will be fixed - it would have been nice to get down to the water which certainly looked appealing from high up.
