Itinerary description
Why worthwhile? Quiet walk in the even quieter Tiroler Gailtal.
Starting point: Parking lot at the Kanterhofer ski lift: from Sillian towards Kartitsch, about 500m before Kartitsch go down diagonally right (towards Hollbruck), across the bridge directly up left. Lift after 200m on the right hand side. [Tiroler Gailtal, Bezirk Lienz – Ost-Tirol]
Time: 1¼ – 1½ hours.
Difficulties: Quiet alms, forest paths and supply roads. Short part from Birgl to Kartitsch through the forest across a narrow and partially steep mountain path. Pay attention to description and take your own topographic map along!
Route description:
Walk up from the ski lift left across the road, pass house no. 174 and the building next to it (Feriënwohnung and barn). Directly after the barn go up right across a tractor path (unmarked). Up across the alp towards a tree with bench. Go right crossing the alp towards the forest border (we pass underneath the ski lift). At the next bench we enter the forest. At a fork we go left following the red-white-red markings. Continue to a cross road with a resting bench and take a left here (road sign “Schustertal, 1std”).
After a while, we keep right at a y-fork (pay attention: there are no road signs or markings here). After 10 to 15 minutes we arrive at a supply road. We follow it to the right out of the valley (north-eastern direction, road no. 468). At a certain moment we arrive at an asphalted road again with a fork: keep left here towards “Birgl” (road sign “Birgl, 5 min”).
At “Birgl” (1422m) continue on the unpaved supply road (“Privatweg”, red-white-red markings). In the forest, go right at a fork across a narrow path down towards “Hollbruck” (road sign). AT the next fork keep right (road sign “Kartitsch”): across a narrow forest path we descend (partially steep) towards the forest border. Here we stay right, towards Kartitsch. This way we walk past the forest border for a while. At a gate we come across a bend of an asphalted road: keep left here downwards. Subsequently keep right and just before the upcoming bridge go right up towards the ski lift.
