MURO DE LAS LAMENTACIONES

You cannot talk about the walls of Jerusalem without mentioning the famous "Wailing Wall", 57 meters that constitute an extraordinarily important monument, as well as being the largest pilgrimage site for Jews throughout the world. Its importance lies in the fact that this wall, according to legend, is the rest that the Roman emperor Titus left standing at the Sacred Temple of Solomon (the second, built by Nehemiah and the priest Ezra, since the first Temple had been destroyed by the Babylonians ). Titus would have left this fragment of the wall as a reminder that Rome had defeated Judea (this is why it was called the Western Wall by the humiliated Jews), although the Jews attributed it to the fact that it was a gift from God to keep that piece of Wall, an offering for the Hebrew people. Also called the Western Wall, it is a place as famous as controversial, because it is here where Judaism, Islamism and if we want Christianity come together since this historic wall is at the same time the last vestige of the Second Temple of Solomon that was erected where we find today the Esplanade of the Mosques, the Noble Sanctuary of the Muslims the place from which Muhammad ascended to the heavens, but it is also the place where the Foundation Stone is preserved, inside the Dome of the Rock, where it is believed to be hid the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the Tables of the Law for the Jews or the Tables of the Ten Commandments, for the Christians. Under the Foundation Stone, there is also the Well of Souls of the Jewish tradition, the center of the world and the entrance to the Abyss that contains the waters of Flood and the souls of the dead awaiting the final judgment. It is also the place where the annunciation of the birth of John the Baptist reason for worship in the Christian took place. It goes without saying that all these places: Western Wall, Esplanade of the Mosques, Dome of the Rock and inside the Foundation Stone and the cave that is accessed by the southeast corner of the Foundation Stone , the Well of Souls are a must stop on our itinerary.

ESPLANADA DE LAS MEZQUITAS O MONTE DEL TEMPLO

It is a natural elevation within the Old City. It is considered by the three monotheistic religions as a sacred site. The Jews and Christians affirm, based on the Torah and the Bible, respectively, that this is the place where Abraham sacrificed his only son to show his love to God. On the other hand, Muslims maintain that this place is where Muhammad ascended to heaven, by the hand of the angel Gabriel. Specifically, this happened from a rock that is currently inside the Dome of the Rock. In the Esplanade of the Mosques we not only find the Dome of the Rock of Jerusalem. Also here we can visit Al Aqsa Mosque or Al-Masyid Al-Aqsa, literally «the distant mosque». In addition, it is possible to contemplate spectacular views of the Western Wall, which is very close to the esplanade. It is possible to see both the male and female side of the wall, although they are heavily guarded to avoid terrorist acts of any kind. It is necessary to take into account, when visiting the area, that it may be subject to certain schedule restrictions, or even that it is closed for security reasons. Therefore, it is advisable to inform yourself about this a couple of days before visiting it.

CUPULA DE LA ROCA

The Dome of the Rock is located in the Jerusalem Mosque Esplanade, a place considered sacred by the three great monotheistic religions One of the most impressive and peaceful places in Jerusalem. It is one of the most important monuments at the religious level, the oldest in Islam, since it dates from 691. It was built by Caliph Abd al-Malik to remember the place from which, according to the Qur'an, Muhammad ascended to heaven . The dome, which gives its name to the temple, is a wooden construction, covered with gilded copper, the lower part of the building is clad in marble, while the upper one is made of tiles, as a curiosity, the latter date from 1552, moments in which those that the city was under the Ottoman command. The temple floor is octagonal and has a double ambulatory, which surrounds the central space where the rock we mentioned earlier is located. The objective of this corridor is for the faithful to walk around the rock, just as they do in Mecca, where they go seven laps to the Kaaba where the Black Stone is. This is, for Islam, the third most sacred temple. It is only behind the famous Ka'ba temples in Mecca or the Prophet's mosque in Medina. Therefore, it is the most important temple outside of Saudi Arabia.

Located next to the Mosque Esplanade, it is the largest neighborhood in the Old City of Jerusalem. A neighborhood that retains its medieval structure and is full of life thanks to the colorful and colorful souks. These markets are one of the great attractions of the neighborhood. Here you can enjoy the colorful fabrics, the smell of spices and the joy of sellers. Paradoxically, the most representative places for the followers of Islam are not in him, but on the Temple Mount. You can enter the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem through three doors; the Damascus Gate, which also serves as an entrance to the Christian neighborhood, specifically, the one on the street known as 'el-wad', which means 'the valley'. You can also reach the Muslim quarter through Herod's Gate from which you reach the house where Pilate sent Jesus, who was from Herod Antipas. The third and last entry is known as Puerta de los Leones. The Muslim quarter of Jerusalem hides places of great relevance to other religions; in this part of the city is the Via Dolorosa, which crosses the entire neighborhood. The church of Santa Ana is also in the Muslim quarter, in the same place where the house of the Virgin Mary's parents was built. And, although without water, also here is the famous Bethesda pool, where Jesus worked the miracle of healing the paralytic, according to the New Testament. The Jews also have some sacred points within the Muslim quarter. Here stands the small Wailing Wall, where many Jews come to pray. Other points of Jewish tradition in the Muslim quarter are the Kotel tunnel and the Zedekiah cave, where the last king of Jerusalem took refuge after being defeated.

III ESTACION DEL VIACRUCIS

STATIONS OF THE PAINFUL VIA Pilate's Judgment - Stations I and II They begin in the immediate vicinity of the place where the Antonia Tower was erected, where today we find the Flagellation Church Complex, to which the Church of the Condemnation and the Convent of the Sisters of Zion also belong, where it was found, during some excavations, the remains of a stone pavement that coincided with the description made by the Apostle San Juan in relation to the process of Jesus in the Second Canonical Gospel. Although later archaeological studies show that it is actually a piece of pavement that covered a vault under which there is still a swimming pool, struthion, carried out after the death of the Catholic messiah. The three falls Seasons - III, VII and IX They make reference to the popular memory of the facts, since there is no written reference in any of the biblical texts that mention this event. The first fall is made at the Penance Station III, located in the Polish Catholic Chapel of the s. XIX, the second fall is at Station VII at the crossroads of the Franciscan Chapel of 1875 and the third is Station IX, between two monasteries the Orthodox of Ethiopia and the Coptic Orthodox of San Antonio, below which is the Chapel of Saint Helenaen. The Meetings Stations - IV, V, VI, VIII It refers to the encounters that according to popular tradition and the Synoptic Gospels Jesus had on his way to Golgotha. The IV when he finds his mother located in the Armenian Catholic Oratory of s. XIX, the V when Simon of Cyrene takes the cross of Jesus to help him located in the Chapel of Simon. The VI is an encounter with Veronica who wiped the sweat and blood of Christ in the Church of Santa Faz and Santa Verónica with a cloth. The last, Station VIII meeting was the one he had with the pious women located in the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Santo Charalampus. The rest of the stations take place within the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Every Friday a procession follows this street that follows this itinerary in remembrance of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Sepulcher is the most important place for Christianity in Jerusalem. This is the place where it is believed that Jesus Christ was buried and where the miracle of the Resurrection occurred. Therefore, it is a place of pilgrimage for Christians around the world. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem is also known as that of the Resurrection or the Anastasis. This Christian temple is guarded by several confessions. Catholics, Orthodox and Orthodox Armenians manage the most important sanctuary of the Christian religion. In the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem you will find Calvary, which is the mound where the cross was placed on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Inside the church of the Holy Sepulcher you can also see another historical element, it is the stone where Jesus Christ was anointed once his body was lowered from the cross. The chapel of the Holy Sepulcher is the place where the remains of Jesus Christ are supposedly buried. To get here you have to go through the one known as Rotunda to get to the Ediculum, this construction has been renovated several times, the last one at the beginning of the 19th century.

The Armenian Quarter is the smallest of the four neighborhoods of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is located in the southwest part of it. It is a quiet neighborhood in which ecclesiastical institutions hide behind high walls of monasteries and churches, giving it a mystery character. The Gate of Sion marks the beginning of the limit with the Jewish Quarter, with which it borders on the south-east and the east. It shares a short border with the Muslim Quarter, and borders on the north with the Christian Quarter, with which it shares the Jaffa Gate. Despite their small size and population, the Armenians and their patriarchy, the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, are very present in the city. Although Armenians are Christians, they emphasize their identity in front of the Christian Quarter.
