Hungarian Walk of Friendship 2023 Day 1 Sopron to Sopronkövesd

Waypoint

After exiting the Sopron forest you continue until this way point, where you can see the Harka village church spire to the left. Turn left along the grass path through the field towards Harka village.

Turn left out of the field, over a small bridge and onto the dirt road. Continue along the dirt road and follow it as it veers right. Continue straight ahead

You can see Harka village. Continue straight on the dirt road. As you enter the outskirts of the village, turn left over the small bridge into the village. Turn at the second street on the right (Gyopár Utica) and into Harka

There is a small convenience shop and a Tabac just off the Main Street, Gyopár utca, where you can buy cold drinks and snacks.

Pass the church in your RHS (right hand side)

At the intersection, veer slightly left and continue straight ahead.

There is a cafe bar on your RHS as you leave Harka that opens at 11am M-F and 10am on the weekend. Continue past the cafe bar and follow the road straight as it leaves Harka.

At the Hungarian / Austrian border continue straight ahead. Continue to follow the road road as it turn to the right past a large building. Continue until a factory on you LHS and, keeping close to the factory, veer left along the small the road and left again at a path beside a small stagnant water way. Follow the path with the train line on your LHS until the junction and turn right onto the bike path. Continue to follow the bike path into the fields. Turn left at the first junction and continue towards the large factory and Deutschkreutz. Turn left into the factory and walk straight through it - this is allowed.

After you exit the factory, turn right over the railway line and into Deutschkreutz.

After entering Deutschkreutz, continue through the roundabout and straight ahead to the SPAR supermarket on your RHS

Provisioning

There is a large SPAR supermarket on your RHS. This is a good place to buy lunch and rest. The SPAR also has a bar and toilet. When you leave SPAR, continue along the main road and straight ahead

Continue down the Main Street, passing the church on your RHS. Continue to a charging station / garage on your LHS and turn left at the next street, Webergasse

At the roundabout, turn right onto Elissbethgasse. Continue straight along Elisabeth gases until it crosses a small bridge.

At the V junction with a religious statue in the centre and a paddock of llama on your RHS, veer to the right going up hill, past a winery on your LHS and into the vineyards. Continue straight until you are nearly at the end of the vineyards and about to reach the forest. Turn right.

At the first road on the left, the is a bench on the LHS. Turn left past the bench and towards the forest.

At the T intersection, turn right and continue, passing the blue and yellow gate. Continue straight ahead to the next T junction, where you turn left. Continue straight ahead through the forest

Continue to follow the road straight ahead through the forest.

At the end of the forest road there is an approx 20 meters of ‘bush bashing’ through the overgrown section before you come out onto the bitumen road. At the road turn left and follow the road as it turns right and towards the wind turbines on your LHS. Continue straight ahead along the road as it goes through the fields. When you come to a road near the end of the fields (with the tree line ahead), turn left and continue along the road. The bitumen road turns right, but continue straight ahead into the grassy dirt path and follow it as it turns right and comes out on a bitumen road.

Continue along the grassy dirt road until the bitumen road. At the bitumen road, turn left.

The Austrian / Hungarian border

Waypoint

At the Austrian / Hungarian border, follow the road to the right and then continue to follow as it turns left. Continue straight ahead into Sopronkövesd.

Continue into Sopronkövesd and turn right after the town sign. Continue along the bike path to the second road on the left and turn left onto it, continuing to the main road. There is a COOP supermarket to the left on the main road, where you can buy supplies for tomorrow’s breakfast and lunch.

Provisioning

COOP supermarket for breakfast and lunch supplies tomorrow. You can also buy dinner supplies if you’d like to cook in the community accommodation kitchen.

Overnight

You will see a large colourful KOVESD sign and a large wooden cello (strung with barbed wire from the Iron Curtin) on your LHS. This is where you will find your first night’s accommodation.
