Itinerary description
Late afternoons on weekdays you can watch thousands of American White Pelicans gather to enjoy fish scraps...and they line up for the event! A spectacle you can't afford to miss. This site is described in Chapter 17 of the book Outdoors in Western Mexico 2.
HOW TO GET THERE WITH GOOGLE MAPS: Leave Guadalajara heading SW on the highway to Colima. Then ask Google Maps to take you to "Pelicanos Borregones, Cojumatlan, Michoacan." This procedure gets you to Petatán via San Luis Soyatlán, which I recommend.
HOW TO GET THERE ON YOUR OWN:
From Guadalajara, take highway 54 towards Colima. Take the Morelia (also labeled Jiquílpan or Mazamitla) turnoff after about 40 kilometers and drive toward Jocotepec. Pass the Jocotopec turnoff and follow the road south and then east along the lake, passing Tuxcueca, Mismaloya and Tizapán. Twenty kilometers past Tizapán, turn left and drive into Petatán. In the town, keep left at every opportunity and—986 meters from the highway—you will reach the main feeding spot, marked by giant, multicolored letters saying PETATAN. Your GPS will read N20.16203 W102.86607. Driving time from Guadalajara is one hour and 35 minutes. From Jocotepec it’s about one hour.
