Itinerary description

During a family reunion in the Glenview Hotel, I decided to explore the Glen of the Downs, part of which I walked in 2011 (see Kilmacanogue to Willow Grove). I parked my car on the side of a back road, as I was not aware of where the car park was located (I have now marked it on the map with a waypoint, and I would recommend starting from the Car Park). The Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve is a 59 hectares of Oak Woodlands situated 8 km south of Bray and cut in halves by the N11 motorway. It has many nice woodland walks which are not too difficult. It is well known because of the protest by environmentalists from 1997 to 2000 against the destruction of the forest in order to improve the roadway. The protesters lost and the motorway was completed in 2003. I was reminded of this because of the noise pollution from the motorway which could be heard right up to the highest point of the walk. At the point of the route which passes over the Three Trout River (waypoint Stream) I left the forest crossed unto private land using a plank which was laid over the stream, down through a field where horses grazed, to finally climb over a gate (waypoint Gate) and back onto the country lane. All this would have been avoided by starting from the Car Park. A pleasant walk with many routes to be explored, well worth a visit if you are in the area.
