Edinburgh Castle is not what is traditionally thought of as a castle. It's more of a medieval fortress on top of the hill, with a surrounding wall and several buildings. Actually it is one of the oldest fortified places in Europe.

One O‘Clock Gun und Aussicht zum Calton Hill

Simultaneously with the roar of the One O'Clock Gun, a small ball, the Time Ball, falls down Calton Hill. From 1861, the acoustic and optical signals together were used by seafarers in the port of Leith to set their clocks precisely. The cannon was used because the Time Ball in Leith could not be seen due to bad weather.

St.Margaret's Chapel

The small, unassuming chapel is the oldest building in Edinburgh. The sober St Margaret's Chapel was built by King David I in the 1130s to honor his mother, Queen Margaret. The Englishwoman was born in Hungary in exile. As Scottish monarch, she brought monastic orders into the country, among other things. She was canonized in 1249 for her loyalty to the church. The stained glass windows by Douglas Strachan were added in 1922, they are beautiful.

Mary Stuart's son was born here at the castle in 1566. He came to the throne as James I after the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England, uniting the English and Scottish crowns. In doing so, he laid the foundation for today's united kingdom. Having moved to London, however, James no longer has much in mind for Scotland. Only in 1617 did he come to Edinburgh once more.
