Blackford Hill (164 m) was formed from volcanic rocks, and is one of the 7 hills that make up the city of Edinburgh.
Together with Hermitage of Braid, a natural area is unified with a multitude of paths to travel, the variables are multiple, and this track is an example. The Royal Observatory in Edinburgh is close to the top (this track avoids going through it, but it can be seen). A beautiful place near the city that is highly visited, with a wide range of flora and fauna with beautiful views, it is crossed by the Braid Burn River, the main watercourse, and near the entrance to the park it opens into a small and bucolic lagoon, its Aguas is home to a bird farm in which swans, herons and ducks live, as well as other small animals, such as frogs and toads.
And if you want to take your time enjoying this place, the entire route is full of benches to rest and relax.
⏳ Total tour: 1.30 hrs
It START from the entrance to the Park on CharterHall Rd. There are buses that bring you closer to the area. I arrived on foot, from the upper part of the Royal Mail, it takes about 45 min.
ASCENT: 20 min
Short stretch of climb to the top of Blackford Hill. You will go up comfortably, having beautiful views of the city, the Pentlands and Arthur's Seat among others.
Descent: 1.10 hours
It is a descent, but with sections of short climbs and flattening. From the top we will go to a small hill. We will leave by the grassy hill towards the observatory, instead of reaching it, we will turn left to this small hill, about 10 min.
Cerro- Rio Braid Burn: 20 min
Nice section downhill through a beautiful forest.
Section parallel to the river: 10 min
We follow the path parallel to the river, on the flat.
We arrive at the crossroads, we take the ascent to the right, by the stairs. Here we cross a beautiful beech forest, after a short climb, and through the forest we arrive at the picnic area, in about 10 minutes.
Last section, here we can take any of the 2 paths, in both we will arrive at the beautiful lagoon.
