Itinerary description
This is a simple day trip from Copenhagen (or the airport) to visit two Thomas Dambo trolls. (See www.trollmap.com)
Our attempt to find Manemor (our first troll) was hindered by the fact that I had an inaccurate GPS location loaded into my hand-held GPS - it was out by approx 100m. The trolls that we have visited so far are all located away from the major tracks and although there are paths that lead from the main track to the trolls these paths are not obvious. For something that one expects are visited many times the trolls are still quite secluded. After finding Manemor we knew what we were doing and things became fairly straight forward.
We used the IC trains from the airport to Hedehusene - if you get a good set of connections this is an approx 30 min trip. This will normally involve a change at Toje Taastrup - because Hedehusene is not a normal stop for the faster trains. The IC trains have a reputation for not being on time, a reputation that DSB lived up to for us, so be warned that you may miss a tight connection at Toje Taastrup. (Use https://www.rejseplanen.dk for trip planning, costing etc).
We walked from Hedehusene station, although you could use a local bus to reduce the amount of walking. We like looking at the houses in the suburbs, so the walk is interesting. The other option is to go on a day when the Hedeland vintage railway is operating and then you could combine some troll hunting with a train trip. (See https://hedeland.dk/oplev/veteranbane.html)
Within the Hedeland area there are multiple trails, we walked the main trails as we wanted to find the trolls as the primary objective. There are also 'nature trails' that are narrow walking trails with a significantly more 'remote' feel to them. There are sign posts for these trails.
The trolls: you can't really get the idea of these installations/art works until you actually visit one. The photos don't capture the whole feel. They are very organic and blend into the landscape, while large they are not unfriendly and children love them. The trolls are definitely worth a visit.
