Itinerary description
The first waypoint is at a major Dalian bookstore (5 floors) with an English language section, a wide selection of Chinese fountain pens, and lots of art and calligraphy supplies. From there, walk to a preserved old Russian Section of town. A tourist oriented street features period architecture from before the 1904-05 Russian-Japanese war, also Russian souvenirs, and restaurants.
Then a ride on the tram system to the southeastern terminus station. There are two styles of trams, very old Japanese ones, and newer ones. Today 27 cars of type DL3000 built by the Japanese in the 1930s still remain and serve. With patience one can wait until one of these comes along. Fare is 1 RMB for any distance. We continued to the terminus station, then back-tracked to a traditional department store and shopping area. Disembark here to do some authentic local shopping and bargaining, and then explore on foot to the south, into a very interesting older part of Dalian with some restauraunts.
Waypoints
Main Dalian Bookstore
5 floors, English book section, a wide selection of Chinese fountain pens including many very low cost ones, calligraphy and art supplies.
Modern shopping areas
In this area, sections of Dalian are rebuilt with western style shopping malls and car free streets. There are older more traditional shopping areas, one farther to the south east along this track.
Bridge to Russian Street
Crosses major railways serving the Dalian Port area.
'Russian Street'
Architecture from the Russian control period, from prior to the Japanese Russian War of 1904-05. A second Russian period came at the end of WWII when Russia displaced the Manchurian Japanese presence, and then stayed until sometime in the 1950's under an Agreement with New China.
Nearest Tram station to Russian Street
All trams (old and new) stop here with 1 RMB fare. During busy periods care is required crossing any street in these areas of Dalian, even if the Walk indicator is solid on. If hung up, one strategy is to shadow a local person who shows confidence and competence.
Southeast terminus station of Tram line
Must descend, cross road and pay another 1 RMB (25 US cents) if backtracking on the trams. If your outbound was on a moden tram, here's another chance to wait and switch to an antique Japan version. Be very careful descending, some stations descend passengers into a traffic lane.
Good stop for more traditional Dalian shopping experience
Shoe stores, traditional booths, Chinese coffee and tea without the 'Starbucks'
The waypoint is at the entrance to a large building where the ground floor is entirely Chinese shoes and boots, and other leather goods, with additional floors above. No specific posted prices, bargaining in order. A world of difference between shopping here and shopping in more recently developed western-style downtown shopping.
Exploration to the south west, towards Mingze Lake
Exploring back streets with old residential areas, shops, and restaurants. Several interesting restaurants around the waypoint location. If time suggest continuing to Mingze Lake and Fenglin Street (we didn't have time), but passed Mingze Lake in a taxi and it looks like a lovely place to relax and wander around.
