Croatia. Monumental visit to Hvar

The Island of Hvar is a beautiful place situated in front of the Pakleni Islands. Known as the Croatian Ibiza, this jewel of the Adriatic stands out for being one of the most visited corners of Croatia and an essential stop on a trip to this country.

Plaza de San Esteban is the main square of the island. It is located in the heart of the port and always has a huge movement of inhabitants and tourists due to its strategic location to access the center of Hvar. In this square, in addition to several restaurants, you will find the Cathedral, the theater and the tourist office of Hvar.

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the largest building on the island. Built on the former Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Lesma, it became a cathedral when the center of the diocese moved from Stari Grad to Hvar in the 13th century. Its current appearance dates back to the 16th and 18th centuries and highlights the basilica structure with three naves, a rectangular sanctuary and a Renaissance choir.

On the outside, the facade has the symbol of the Holy Trinity and the Renaissance bell tower, located in the north of the building, was built in 1550. Inside you can see up to 9 baroque altars from the 17th century.

Hvar port. This is one of the hottest spots on the island. You will find countless bars and pubs, as well as ice cream parlors. In it we will find the statue of the fisherman sitting a few meters from Lucica beach.

The National Theatre. Built in 1612 on the site of the arsenal where ships were repaired, it is considered the oldest theater in Europe, and it is not for nothing that Croatians brag about it and brag about it to the tourists who visit.

The Venetian Lodge. Located in the heart of the city, this 16th century Renaissance beauty had to be repaired and restored after the 1571 fire during the Turkish siege.
At the beginning of the 17th century, its balustrade facade with decorative pyramid tops was finished by the master Tripun Bokanic.

Walking through the narrow and steep streets of Hvar, flanked by beautiful buildings and stone houses, is undoubtedly one of the most important activities to do in Hvar.

Spanish fortress. Built in the 16th century by the Venetians to protect the city. It is located about 100 meters above sea level. It is accessed from the main square of the island, Plaza de San Esteban, and it will not take you more than 30 minutes. You can also arrive by car or motorcycle and park in a small car park located right at its entrance.

From above you will get one of the best views of the Adriatic and its islands. If you have the opportunity, do not miss the best sunset to see in Hvar and one of the most beautiful sunsets you will see in your life. Locals call it the Spanish fortress (Fortica Spanjola) because Spanish engineers collaborated in its construction.

Napoleon's Lookout. It is a place that is about 45 minutes walk from the city center, although you can also easily access it by car or motorcycle. There is a car park at the top, although spaces are limited. From there you will get beautiful views of Fortica, Hvar and the Paklinski Islands.

The Franciscan Monastery is located in the center of Hvar, just behind the Lucica beach. Admission is free and inside you can see a beautiful cloister, the chapel and its gardens from which you can get magnificent views.

One of the most important things to do in Hvar is to visit its beaches, some of which are among the best beaches in Croatia. Among them, these stand out that, without a doubt, are my favorites:

Dubovica Beach: It is for many the most beautiful beach to visit in Hvar. To access it you have to go down a somewhat complex path of stones and earth, so I recommend you use suitable footwear. It's worth it because once you're down, you discover a beautiful beach with crystal clear turquoise waters.

Pokonji Dol Beach: Located 25 minutes walk from the port. You will be captivated by its crystal clear waters and the environment that surrounds it.

Mekicevica or Robinson Beach: This is a real gem of a beach, although it is somewhat hidden. It has a quiet atmosphere due to its relatively small size. Its waters are crystal clear and very calm, surrounded by trees where you can rest in the shade. You can reach it from Pokonji Dol by walking about 15 minutes.

Lucica Beach: It is a beach located in the center. With the Franciscan monastery reflected in its crystal clear waters, it makes the environment unbeatable.

Near Hvar is the town of Stari Grad, the oldest town on the island of Hvar, founded by the Greeks in the 4th century BC. C. with the name of Pharos. Among its places of interest, the palace of the poet Petar Hektorovic and the Dominican monastery. The fertile plain of Stari Grad, where mainly vines and olive trees are grown. In addition to being a nature reserve, it is a World Heritage Site.
