Croatia. Monumental visit to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is known worldwide as the pearl of the Adriatic and since 1979 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Lovrijenac Fort or Fortaleza San Lorenzo, imposing fortress, which is also known as the "Gibraltar of Dubrovnik". Located outside the city wall, it rises 37 meters above sea level. It is a triangular-shaped fortress that was built to face the enemy siege in a record time of 3 months. It has an outer wall whose thickness is 12 meters to combat bombing and an inner wall of only 60 cm.

The soldiers were rotated every month so that in that short time they gave the best of themselves and they only provided the essential food for those 30 days. This fact, together with the strategic location of the fort, meant that for centuries it remained insurmountable against enemies and hence the sign at the entrance that reads "No Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro" whose translation is "Freedom is not not sell for all the riches in the world.

The Pile Gate is the main access to the walled city. It was built in 1537 in the western part of the walls. Today, this place is a small tower that joins two bridges over the old moat of the wall where there is now a children's playground.

Here you will find the sculpture of Saint Blaise, Dubrovnik's patron saint, welcoming visitors by holding a model of the city. Through the Pile Gate you will access a second inner gate and between the two you will find a map of the city and a diagram with the damage that occurred during the Croatian War of Independence.

Onofrio's Fountain. This is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city. It is an original stone fountain, built by the architect Onofrio della Cava in 1438, with a 16-sided polygonal structure, topped with a large dome on top, located right at the entrance to the Pile Gate, in front of the Church of San Salvador.

The water flows through the 16 mouths in the shape of a mask, located on each of the 16 sides of the construction. It had to be restored almost in its entirety, except for the masks, after the 1667 earthquake. It is also the only source that flows drinking water 24 hours a day, with which you can drink and refill bottles or jugs of water at any time.

San Salvador Church, built as a sign of gratitude for the salvation from the earthquake of 1520, by master Korcula Andrijic who finished it in 1528. It is located next to the Franciscan monastery and the city walls and in front of the great Onofrio fountain.

During the summer months, works by local painters are exhibited inside and chamber concerts are held. The Church did not suffer any damage during the 1667 earthquake that devastated the city.

Dubrovnik Walls, constitute the main attraction and therefore an essential stop on our tour of the most important places to see in Dubrovnik. An imposing defense system that includes 16 bastions, five fortresses and 120 cannons distributed in its almost 2000 meter perimeter.

You will enjoy the views of the orange roofs of the city and the splendor of the Adriatic Sea. Of the original walls built in the 8th century, little or nothing remains today, since the walled complex that looks today dates from the 14th century when Dubrovnik achieved independence from the Republic of Venice. In later times they were modified and reinforced to combat the harassment of the Venetians and the Ottomans.

Impregnable for years, they were finally taken by the Napoleonic army in 1806 and by the Russian and Austrian armies in 1816, breaking the invincibility of previous centuries.

Later, during the years 1992 and 1993, the Yugoslav bombings caused havoc although they were repaired and today there is no trace of this last war.

To access the walls, you can buy tickets at the Dubrovnik tourist office, located opposite the Onofrio's Fountain. There are other accesses to the wall, located in the Fort of San Juan and in the Tower of San Lucas, near the Ploče gate.

Franciscan monastery. Built in 1317, it is located on Stradun Street, in front of the Great Onofrio Fountain, here are the remains of Ivan Gundulic, the most famous poet of the Croatian language.

The most remarkable thing about the building is its interior Gothic-style courtyard with more than 100 columns, with capitals decorated with animals and plants. Right in the center you can find a stone well with a figure of San Francisco. The Monastery, like many other buildings in the city, was destroyed during the 1667 earthquake.

The monks built an apothecary for medicines and prescriptions that became well known among the inhabitants of Dubrovnik and that has been active since the 14th century, being today the third oldest pharmacy in the world. Currently you can still see the furniture and tools with which the monks prepared their recipes and together with it, the monastery library that contains thousands of books on medicine.

Stradun Street is the main artery of the city and its route, about 300 meters long. Here you can find some of the most important buildings, the best cafes, restaurants and shops in the city. In medieval times it was a marshy channel that separated the city of Ragusa from the village of Dubrava. This canal was drained and became the street that it is today in the 13th century. The appearance that it looks today is due in part to the earthquake of 1667 since the buildings were rebuilt and used the most uniform and harmonious design of the facades. Thus, all the houses on this street are from the 17th century and have the same design.

When in 1918 the city became part of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, Stradun Street was renamed Placa although its original name has never been lost.

At the end of Stradun street you will find Plaza de la Luza. Some of the most important monuments that you can visit in Dubrovnik are concentrated in this place, such as the Sponza Palace, the Main Guard building, the Church of San Blas, the Orlando Column or the small Onofrio Fountain, little sister of Onofrio's Great Fountain.

The Orlando Column is a 15th-century stone sculpture of a medieval knight presiding over the center of the square. This statue is the symbol of the freedom of Ragusa and the independence of the republic since, according to legend, Orlando was a knight who saved the city from the Arab attack. The sculpture holds a sword and a pole that raises the Croatian flag. Interestingly, the Orlando Column was central to trade as the figure's forearm was used as the unit of measure and the column's foot mark was also used to measure merchandise.

The Clock Tower is one of the main symbols of the city. Every hour on the hour, Maro and Baro, the green elves, are in charge of ringing the bells that can be heard throughout the city. The hours are shown in Roman numerals. This beautiful bell tower also has a beautiful sundial.

Currently, the original statues of these little men can be seen in the Rector's Palace museum.

Sponza Palace, built between 1516 and 1521 by the architect Paskoje Milicevic Mihov. Also known as Divona, it perfectly combines the Gothic and Renaissance styles. The loggia and the carved marble sculptures are the work of the Andrijic brothers. It was used for several functions, among which the customs stand out in its beginnings, school, warehouse, bank and even a mint.

Of great importance in trade, in one of its arches we can still read a phrase in Latin that translated into Spanish comes to say “Our pesos do not allow cheating; when we weigh goods, God weighs them with us.”

Due to the economic transfer, the Mint was established in this palace and later, in the 16th century, it acquired the status of a great cultural center of the city and the Accademia dei Concordi was created where the most educated citizens of Dubrovnik met. .

Church of San Blas. Designed and built by the Venetian architect Marino Gropelli in 1715, it is the most outstanding example of the Venetian Baroque style in the city. In the same place there was a Romanesque basilica from the 14th century that was destroyed by a great fire in 1706. Later, among the rubble, an intact statue of San Blas was found. After the construction in his honor of a new temple that would bear his name, the figure would be returned to the same place where it was found. Currently you can read the following inscription translated into Spanish: "Blas, miraculously protected, was pulled intact from the flames."

Inside, the stained-glass windows stand out and, above all, the marble high altar where the famous gold-plated silver statue of Saint Blaise stands, the work of fifteenth-century Dubrovnik artists.

Dominican monastery. Located between the Sponza Palace and the Ploce Gate, the Dominican Monastery is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Construction began in the early 13th century and it was not completed until the 14th century. It combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. After the earthquake of 1667 they had to rebuild it.

Inside, its patio surrounded by arches with palm and orange trees and its beautiful stone well that played a fundamental role during the War of Independence since it was the only supply of drinking water for the inhabitants of the city stand out.

The Rector's Palace, built as the seat of government and residence of the prince. The figure of the rector was elected for a month to act as President of the Chamber and had to stay on the premises all the time, he could only leave to exercise his functions in state affairs.

Inside the palace you will see the rooms of the Great Council and the Small Council, a room for trials, a prison, an armory and a powder magazine. Right at the entrance there is an inscription in Latin that translated comes to say: “Forget the private and take care of the public”. Today the palace is home to the Dubrovnik History Museum.

The Cathedral of the Assumption is the most deeply rooted Catholic religious symbol in the city. It was built between the 17th and 18th centuries on the remains of an old cathedral that was destroyed in the 1667 earthquake, by the Italian Andrea Buffalini from Urbino, who took just over 40 years to finish it.

The Cathedral is clearly baroque in style and its blue dome stands out, although what is truly interesting is to be found inside, where you will be surprised by the numerous ornate baroque-style altars and the paintings by different Italian artists, among which the "Assumption of Mary" by Titian and Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola.

In one of the chapels located to the left of the main altar you will find the Treasury of the Cathedral, made up of relics, among which are the remains of San Blas.

Church of San Ignacio. This beautiful baroque church is located a few meters from the Cathedral. It became popular after a famous episode of the famous series "Game of Thrones", where Queen Cersey is humiliated by the people and has to walk the famous stairs of "The Walk of Shame", so this is one of the fundamental places for the followers of the series.

Some beautiful stairs designed by Pietro Passalacqua in 1738, inspired by those of the Spanish Steps, one of the most important places in Rome. It is a clear example of baroque architecture in the city.

One of the charms of the city is getting lost in its streets and discovering the houses with orange roofs, its narrow stone streets, its shops, restaurants and ice cream parlors.

Banje Beach, considered one of the best beaches in the country, is a nice little beach located right in the center of Dubrovnik.
