Croatia. Visit to the Blagaj Monastery

Blagaj is a town in the southeastern region of the Mostar Basin, in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located on the edge of the Bišće plain and is one of the most valuable environments in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This small village is located just 12 km south of Mostar. Blagaj hides some of the most unknown treasures in Europe: the Vrelo Bune and the Blagaj Tekija Monastery. It probably got its name from its temperate weather patterns, as the word “blaga” is Serbo-Croatian for “mild”.

Blagaj is situated at the karst spring of the Buna River. It is one of the largest springs in Europe. This is considered the best example of an underground karst river. The river flows from a karst cave located under 240-meter-high cliffs. The route of the Buna is short, about 9 kilometers to the west, to end up flowing into the Neretva River.

With the arrival of the Ottomans centuries ago, the Turkish sultan of the expedition was amazed by the natural spectacle. In 1520 he ordered the construction of a Tekija or Blagaj Tekke (the Sufi monastery of the dervishes) at the exact point where the Buna River originates.

The Dervishes are a Sufi brotherhood known for their asceticism. In this cult the most mystical dimension of Islam is preached in which the peaceful contemplation of nature plays a very important role. Hence the strategic positioning of the Tekke on the edge of the waters.

Blagaj Tekke is a Dervish house that instantly captivates you with its design that mixes Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style. It is characterized by a beautiful white double-fronted wood finish, stone ceilings, carpet-covered floors, balconies, carved doors, and bathrooms with a star-shaped stained-glass ceiling.

This temple is a place where the Dervishes perform their songs of praise to God called Zikr with a frequency of three nights a week through a special ritual.

For many centuries Blagaj Tekija was used as a meeting place for discussions on scientific topics. Today, this tradition is still maintained by remaining open free of charge to visitors throughout the year.

Inside they serve tea, Turkish coffee and refreshing drinks, which you can savor in the beautiful garden while enjoying the magnificent view of the spring.

Next to Tekija there is a Turbe, that is, a mausoleum where the tombs of Sheikhs Sari Saltuk and Acik Pasha are located. You can also find the guest house of the monastery, called Musafirhana.

Touring the historic center allows you to appreciate the quiet life of its inhabitants. Most of its old structures are a holdover from the Ottoman era.

A trace of the city's Turkish past is a 45-minute walk from Blagaj Tekija. We refer to the Tekke (or Blagaj Castle) which was built in 1766 with elements of the classic Turkish-Baroque style. It is currently a museum open to the public that can be visited throughout the year. We also recommend that you visit the Neretva valley area, an ideal place to enjoy a picnic while you fall in love with the landscape.

You can also visit the Blagaj Bridges, the Karbađoz-beg Bridge and the Leho Bridge, all with the unique characteristics of Ottoman architecture.
