Croatia. Krka National Park. Skradinski Buk
Krka National Park is a true beauty of nature. Located in Dalmatia, in the county of Sibenik-Knin. Krka Park gets its name from the river that runs through it and is located an hour's drive from two popular tourist destinations: Split and Trogir.
Plitvice and Krka are national parks in Croatia with spectacular waterfalls and with water as the main protagonist. Both are the product of the karst phenomenon and travertine: a type of rock formed by the accumulation of salts carried by the water after filtering through the limestone present in the area. And in both you can discover an amazing world of green and blue colors.
Despite the similarities, Krka is much less well known than its neighbor Plitvice, which is not necessarily a disadvantage. On the contrary, touring it is much more pleasant due to the lower influx of tourists and you do not have to get up early to enjoy it calmly and without stress.
National Park since 1985, it comprises 109 square kilometers of land in the Croatian region of Dalmatia, around the Krka River, and up to 7 waterfalls. In addition to its great natural value, it is also home to cultural riches: remains of Roman buildings, archaeological sites, monasteries, churches and medieval walls.
Skradinski buk is what the most visited area is called and where the most beautiful, extensive and well-known waterfall in the park is located. Here the Krka and Čikola rivers converge, whose waters descend for 800 meters at different heights, forming spectacular water terraces that pour hundreds of liters of water into each other. You can explore the area in a pleasant walk of about an hour thanks to the walkways and paths around the waterfall. And there are several viewpoints from which you can observe (and photograph) the landscape.
As if that were not enough to admire the views, bathing is allowed here. Specifically, in the lower part of Skradinski buk, where the waterfall ends. This creates a large natural beach with dozens of people splashing around and cooling off. It is not allowed to approach the Skradinski buk waterfall beyond the protective cordon
There are 5 entrances to access the park and it is worth spending a little time reviewing the information and planning your visit, because there are many possibilities. If it is Skradinski Buk, as it was for us and for most tourists, the main entrance is in Lozovac, it has free parking and it leads directly to this waterfall, either walking down a dirt road, downhill, for about 15 minutes, well by road on the park's free buses. The other alternative is Skradin: this access includes the transfer by boat to Skradinski Buk. Keep in mind that if you go to Krka between November and April the described free transport does not work: you will have to enter by car from Lozovac.
The other 3 entrances allow to know other points of the park, but not Skradinski Buk. One gives access to Roski Slap, the river's second most prominent waterfall; another, to the Krka Monastery and finally, the third, to the archaeological remains of Burnum. All 3 are only accessible by car. An advantage of entering through Skradinski Buk is that for an extra price you can access the rest of the areas mentioned, although doing it the other way around is not possible.
The normal ticket entitles you to visit the specific place through which you access. The most expensive is the one in Skradinski Buk, as the "jewel in the crown" of the park. In addition, from here it is possible to know the rest of the locations of Krka. The options are the following:
Visovac. 2 hours. This island is home to the Franciscan monastery of the same name along with its church and museum. The excursion includes the boat transfer and half an hour to explore it. From afar, it reminds of Lake Bled in Slovenia with its island and church in the center.
Visovac and Roski Slap. 4 hours. It includes the previous route and also adds the other most famous Krka waterfall with the possibility of walking along the walkways around it for an hour.
Krka Monastery. 2.5 hours from Roski Slap. As a complement to the previous tour, you can go to this monastery, the most important of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Croatia, which is located on an island in the upper part of the river.
It seems complex to organize yourself with so many options and variants, and going through the entire park sounds like an impossible mission. In our opinion, Skradinski Buk is the essential that you should not miss.
