Itinerary description

This is really worth the short walk involved, especially if you want to see a reasonable size cork oak plantation that is actively being harvested.

Most of the information about this Cork Oak forest is explained on the sign - see photo.

The important points are that this forest dates back to the time that Canberra was being established and was grown from Spanish acorns. It is one of the oldest sections of the Arboretum and the trees are old enough that it really feels like a forest. Even the aroma is completely different to the Eucalyptus forest that you walk through to get to the Cork Oaks.

The trees are also being actively maintained and harvested, so this is one of the few places where you can actually see how the cork is removed and how the trees regrow over time.
