Ciudad Romana de Ocuri, Sierra de Grazalema
This is a guided walk as they are still finding archaeological remains and new areas, so it’s important you follow the guide. At every important stop she explains about it. She will also explain it in English if you ask for it.
At the moment due to lack of EU funds the work has stopped.
It only costs 2 euros for an entrance ticket or 1,50 if you are an OAP.
The starting point is at the Ocuri visitor centre.
This trail runs along the Roman city of Ocuri located on top of the “Salto de la Mora” (which is a bit of a climb, but not too hard), from where it dominates and controls the natural roman road towards Benaocaz and the passageway to Villaluenga.
It is the first Roman civilization discovered in Spain, and its remains
suggest it was a very important city.
From the ancient walled city, in the top you can see to the south wonderful views of Ubrique and in the north part you can see Benaocaz.
The first thing that appears is a mausoleum with some niches. Inside the walls you can see the trace of a city with remains walls of houses, old water pipes, public buildings, water cisterns and deposits, hot spring and a forum.
Schedules guided tours are:
Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00, 12:00 and 16:00.
Sunday: 10:00 am and 12:00 pm.
The tour lasts about 1 ½ hours and is well worth seeing this historical site.
Closed on Mondays. It is best to ring up and make an appointment. You can find the number on the Ocuri website.
Adjacent to the Visitor centre (where you will see a short film about what the city would have looked like), there is a Restaurant which has lovely views.
Ask for Antonio who is exceptionally friendly and made our day.
It takes ½ an hours’ drive on the A374 to get to Ocuri.
From Ubrique take the road A-2302 direction Benaocaz. The start is 1 km on the right.
