Huế is a city in Vietnam, capital of the province of Thua Thien-Hue, in the Central-North Coast region, and has about 350,000 inhabitants.
Physical geography
The city is located in central Vietnam on the banks of the Perfume River a few kilometers from its mouth in the South China Sea. Hanoi, the country's capital, is about 700 kilometers to the north while the city of Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is about 1100 kilometers to the south.
Located in a plain at the foot of the Truong Son mountain range crossed by the final course of the Perfume River and the Bo River, Huế is located at an average altitude of 3-4 meters above sea level.
History
Ancient capital of unified Vietnam from 1802 to 1945 during the reign of the 13 emperors of the Nguyễn dynasty. 5 km from the city is the Imperial City built in 1687. In 1786 it was occupied by the Tay Son rebels and in 1802 it was conquered by Already Long of the Nguyen dynasty. In 1885 the city was occupied by the French. During the colonial era it was the capital of the Annam Protectorate.
During the Vietnam War, Huế's central location placed it near the border between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The city was part of South Vietnam.
In the Tet offensive of 1968, during the battle of Huế, the Americans, aware of the cultural, artistic and spiritual importance of the city, decided to reconquer it by avoiding indiscriminate bombing by the notorious B52s. Thus, at the cost of many American lives, a house-by-house reconquest was carried out, with new warfare techniques that would later end up in many military manuals. However, the damage in the city due to the clashes was considerable.
The reconquest took place with hard fights and was resolved after many days. To this will be added the famous Huế massacre carried out by North Vietnamese forces.
Along the Perfume River are the Thiên Mụ Pagoda (1601) and the imperial tombs. In 1993 the complex of monuments of Huế were declared a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO [2].
