Itinerary description

I did this route with the An Oiga group lead by Nancy. It is an interesting route because it can be accessed from Dublin by Public Transport. We travelled by the 145 Dublin Bus from Westmorland Street to the last stop in Kilmacanogue. From there we crossed the footbridge over the N11 Road from where we started our walk. Walking up Quill Road we then took a turn to the right and passed the Gaelic Football grounds. Shortly afterwards we entered a narrow mountain route surrounded by a forest of tall ferns, some reaching two meters. We continued along this lovely path until we reached Waypoint Ascent 200714, which is the beginning of the path to the top of the Sugarloaf. The path from here on is difficult and as you get closer to the top it becomes very difficult. At some stages on the ascent and descent it was necessary to climb using all fours. From the top of the Sugarloaf there are spectacular views of the coastline from North Dublin to Wicklow and the surrounding Counties. It is possible to take a more direct route from the top for the journey back to Kilmacanogue, but we chose to retrace our steps to where we had left some of the group (Ascent 200714). From there we continued along the path which circles the mountain, until we again entered the "fern" forest and the road back down to Kilmacanogue. For the most part this is a lovely walk along an easy path and through the ferns. It only becomes difficult for the ascent and descent to the peak. Because of the extensive growth of ferns the walk should be done in dry weather if possible.
