Itinerary description

Technical difficulty: 1/5
Physical difficulty: 1/5

Note: The trails in Slovakia are color-coded (Blue, Green, Red, Yellow). Use the app Trail Pieniny (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.mgaczkowski.pieniny) which is great to see and plan your routes in advance.

Note #2: The Pieniny National Park (at least the path along the Dunajec river) is a fully-developed tourist place. It's crowded, it's loud, everything is monetized, and it's geared towards families who like to take walks, not hikers looking for an adventure.

--

This is a walk from the parking lot at Chata Pieniny (just outside of Lesnica village), along the Dunajec river gorge, to Červeny kláštor (eng. Red Monastery).

The Dunajec gorge is beautiful. However, the same path is used by cyclists and walkers alike, and it's very busy. If you're walking, you'll constantly be stepping aside from cyclists; if you're cycling you'll be avoiding walkers. Personally, we didn't find it all that enjoyable.

At the monastery, there's also an autocamp, rent-a-boats/rafts, restaurants, WC, fast food joints, kiosks, coffee shops, etc. It's also crowded.

You can walk your way back, by following first the Red, then the Blue trail from the monastery to Lesnica. But, instead we decided to rent a canoe and have a new experience on the Dunajec.

Overall, this is recommended for families and light walking trips only; no actual hiking is involved.
