Itinerary description

Changi was originally well-known for its coconut and sago plantations in the 19th century. At that stage, the Changi area consisted of swamps and forests, with three hilly areas later known as Fairy Point Hill, Battery Hill and Temple/Changi Hills. Access to the area was difficult, with only an unpaved track. In the 1920s, the British then built up Changi Village into a "defensive fortress". Together with military installations, there were the requisite buildings to support the base, like accommodation, sports facilities and clubhouses. In 1942, the Japanese forced thousands of POWs to build an airstrip which was completed in early 1944. After the war, the airstrip was handed over to the British Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1946. Changi was likely to be named after the trees in the area. The legendary Changi Tree, or sindora wallichii, was a gigantic 76m-tall tree that became an obvious landmark at Changi and had to be blown off by the British with explosives to prevent it from being used as a map marker by the Japanese.

Heritage Tree (Sepetir)

Native to Singapore. A tree that can grow to more than 30 m tall with a massive crown. Leaves are pinnate compound with 3 to 4 pairs of leaflets. The leaflets are thinly velvety on the lower surface. Flowers are in bunches. The fruits are distinctive. They are pods: flat, round to oblong, with stiff spines, black, woody and splitting open along one side to expose 1-2 round or oval seeds. Heritage Tree (Stem-fruited Fig)

This is a deciduous tree, developing a vast crown of many equally large spreading limbs ending in numerous slender twigs. The tree undergoes a remarkable rhythm in its leaf change. When the tree is about to change its leaves, it sheds the old ones rapidly, remains bare for a few days and then develops the new leaves over most of the crown simultaneously so that the renewal is completed within a fortnight from the opening of the buds. At such times, the ground below the tree is littered with the pale-green bud-scales (stipules) and fallen leaves. A similar habit seems to occur in the related species Ficus superba and Ficus virens.
