Osaka Castle (大 坂 城 ・ 大阪 城 'Ōsaka-jō'?) Is a Japanese castle located in Osaka, Japan. Originally called Ōzaka-jō, it is one of the most famous castles in the country and played an important role in the unification of Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period of the 16th century.
The castle covers an area of approximately one square kilometer, within the public park of Osaka Castle (大阪 城 公園 Ōsaka-jō kōen?). It was built on two platforms of land filled, with walls based on cut stones, and is surrounded by a well with water similar to European castles. The castle has eight interior floors (accessible by an elevator), and five exterior floors, and was built on a high stone base to protect its occupants from attackers with white weapons.
The castle is open to the public and is easily accessible from the Osaka Castle public park station (大阪 城 駅 Ōsaka-jō eki?) Of the Osaka circular line (大阪 環状 線 Ōsaka-kanjōsen?).
The castle is a popular meeting point during the celebrations of the hanami, which takes place during the flowering of the Japanese cherry tree.
The interior of the castle houses a museum, a convention hall and the Toyokuni Altar, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
