It is one of the most spectacular buildings in Kyoto and a perfect example of the architecture of the 'palace castles' of Japan of the Edo period.
Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the residence of the first shogun of the Edo period (1603-1867), Tokugawa Ieyasu and was used by the Tokugawa family since then. In 1867, when the shogunate was abolished and Japan opened to the outside, the castle was used briefly as an imperial palace until it was donated to the city and opened its doors.
It is beautiful, in a word. Like to see their rooms and get an idea of how they lived at the time, as well as learn a lot about the history of Japan during that period and its unification.
I advise audioguide to get the most out of the visit.
