Itinerary description
We came to Cabo de Gata for three days hiking. The first day we did the route of the Salt Lakes. We started from the Hotel Blanca Brisa walking along the Al-3115 road to soon turn off towards the first Observatory. From there we descended the wooden steps to take a narrow pathway to the left. Soon we had to abandon this and climb up to the road again where we continued for 200m till we again left it to take a country road. We were following a route published in Wikiloc in September 2013. We found that part of the track has been blocked since then by a wire fence around a very large vegetable plot. We had to walk around this plot and find the route again at the other side. This change is not on the Google Earth and must therefore be of very recent construction. We then continued along the path beside the fence which surrounds the Salt Lake of the National Park. We visited the Observatories. We ventrally arrived at the village of La Fabriquilla. From there we returned along the route between the sea and the Salt Lake, going through the village of Almadraba Monteleva and the church constructed in 1909 for the workers in the Salt Lake and their families, but closed since 2004. The route took us to the Public Observatories where we were lucky and observed many different species of birds including the very impressive Pink Flamingos. Eventually we arrived at the San Miguel Tower and the town of Cabo de Gata. This is a very easy route, suitable for families, especially if the Flamingos are visiting.
