Itinerary description
It is located 5Km north-west of the town and covers an area of 1050 acres with the capacity to store 15 million m3, making it the second largest wetlands of Southern Greece, after Potami Dam at Amari.
The best period to visit is in early spring when water levels are at it's highest.
Since it's construction it has become a magnet for all types of birds and waterfowl including many species that are faced with extinction (Ferruginous duck, black stork, lanner falcon and kestrels amongst others)
Animals as frogs, hares, hedgehogs, bats, shrews, lizards are also seen in the area.
The walk requires no signage as it follows a wide unmade road circulating the lake.
There is no shade until you get to the church, so food , hat and water will need to be taken with you.
Waypoints
Parking area and start.
Park up by the wooden hut, originally used as an information spot for the lake, but sadly like many Greek attempts to entice naturists and tourists the place was never up kept and is now sadly neglected with no remaining display boards or pictures of the natural habitat to provide the visitor with a guide as to what to look out for. The view from here provides a nice vista of the lake. From here walk down the road south easterly in direction for 900 metres to the road to the left leading towards the dam
Turn off the main road to the left here.
Road leads to the walk across the dam 400 metres further on
Intersection
Keep Left, after 220 metres you will come to the church of Agios Georgios a good place to explore inside the tiny chapel and sit in the shade for a bite to eat taking in the views.
Church of Agios Georgios
The church is normally open and the small grounds provide shade and a good stopping place to eat. Continuing on 340 metres further on you will encounter a river flowing across the road into the lake. There is no alternative route except to go through it. Depending on the time of the year it can either be a trickle or a very fast, calf deep and wide flowing river, so expect to get your feet and boots wet.
Water accross the pathway.
When we crossed this it was too wide to leap across and very fast flowing. It was also a good 7 inches ( 175mm ) deep well above the height of our boots. Squelchy socks from that time onwards :-)
Through Greenhouses
Continue on pathway, passing numerous greenhouses and buildings for another 2 Kms until you hit the main road, turn left and back to the start.
