Itinerary description

We drove to Ballyconnell from Killashandra and parked the car in the Realta Shopping Centre beside the bridge. We crossed the road and walked the path on the left hand side for about 200m along the banks of the Canal, which was opened in 1860 but closed soon after. It was reopened in 1993 as part of the beautiful Shannon Erne navigable waterways. For the next part of the walk takes you have farming land on the right and the river on the left. After passing under the bridge you come to a fork, we took the left path, leading into the Annagh Wood. From here it is a circular walk. The wood has an abundance of bird and animal life and the vegetation is is impressive with many shades of green. Throughout the walk we were treated to a continuous concert of birdsong. We photographed the Speckled Wood butterfly and a blue dragonfly. Now here is a treat for the younger ones that might accompany you. We came across, and photographed, the Ballyconnell Wood Monster. Set them the task of finding it. There are many benches along the route where you can sit, rest and admire the wonders of the forest. Having walked around the perimeter of the Wood, we came to various gates and finally the fork where we entered the wood. From there we returned on the same path, but when we arrived at the footbridge crossing the river, we decided to take this and visit the Canal Lock, where we saw some barges being moved from one level to the other. From there we returned to the town of Ballyconnell. This walk is suitable for all ages. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day and 28 degrees in the sunshine.
Precioso senderismo.
