Avondale House and Forest Park, Wicklow, Ireland

We travelled by train from Dublin Connolly Station to Rathdrum. From the Train Station we walked up the short road to the Bridge and took a left turn along the side of the Factory which lead us to the entry to the forest. Here we entered by a stile where we descended many steps to walk along a narrow forest pathway. All along here there were no other sounds than the birdsong and the music of the Avonmore River. The path widens out and soon we reached a sign for Avondale House, where we took the road to the right up a gentle hill until we reached and opening in the forest. Here we passed what was the gate-lodge of the House. Soon we saw the very impressive Avondale House, which was built in 1777 by a barrister who was know as "the tree man" of Avondale, because of his passion for trees. The Parnell family bought the House in 1795 and Charles Stewart Parnell was born there in 1846. He was one of he greatest political leaders of modern Irish History. Many called him "The Uncrowned King of Ireland". Here we had our snack, in the most spectacular grounds of the House. There are some beautiful sculptures in wood scattered around the grounds. The practice in this great wood has always been that when a tree died from some disease, the woodsmen created a sculpture from the remaining trunk. From here we walked into the forest, meandering along the many pathways, until finally making our way to the River Walk. This lead us to the limits of the Avondale grounds, where we entered a beautiful meadow with many snipe running through the high grasses. There were old dray horses, apparently living out there final years in the luxury of a beautiful meadow. This lead us to gate onto a country road. From here we walked to the Meetings of the Waters, famous for the song of Thomas Moore, which had the lyric:
"There is not in this wide world a valley so sweet
As that vale in whose bosom the bright waters meet.
From here a group of us hired a taxi to Arklow where we caught the public bus to Dublin. The others set off to return to Rathdrum to catch the train to Dublin. This was a nice easy walk suitable for everyone.

Fuimos en tren desde la Estación de Connolly en Dublín hasta el pueblo de Rathdrum en el Condado de Wicklow. Salimos de la estación de Rathdrum andando hasta cruzar el puente sobre la vía, y desde allí hasta llegar a una fabrica. Aquí tomamos un sendero muy estrecho a lado de la fabrica que nos conducía a unos escalones para pasar una cerca y entrar en el bosque. Bajamos una serie de peldaños hasta llegar a un camino forestal bastante estrecho. A lo largo de este camino nos ha acompañado los cánticos de los numerosos pájaros que habitan el bosque y el rumor del Rio Avonmore. Se ensanchaba el camino y al llegar a la señal indicando La Casa de Avondale donde tomamos el camino de la derecha ascendiendo hasta llegar un claro en el bosque. Pasamos por la antigua casa de portería. Pronto vimos la impresionante Casa de Avondale, construido en 1977 por un famosos abogado conocido como "el hombre de los arboles" de Avondale dado su pasión por los arboles. La familia de los Parnell compraron la casa en 1795 y nació Charles Stewart Parnell en 1846. Fue uno de los mejores lideres irlandeses de la historia Moderna. Fue llamado "El Rey de Irlanda nunca coronado" por muchos irlandeses. Comimos el bocadillo en las mesas de merendar a lado de la casa. Hay unos esculturas impresionantes dispersos por el bosque. La practica de los cuidadores de este fabuloso bosque ha sido hacer esculturas de los troncos de cualquier árbol enfermo. Deambulamos por los numerosos senderos del bosque hasta finalmente tomar "el Camino del Río" Llegamos a los límites del Bosque de Avondale, pasamos por una cerca para entrar en un prado grande, donde correteaban agachadizas de un lado al otro. También había unos viejos caballos de trabajo disfrutando sus últimos días en este prado precioso. Al final del prado pasamos pro una verja a una carretera comarcal. Anduvimos a sitio conocido como la Confluencia de las Aguas, por juntar los dos Ríos Avonbeg y Avonmore. El sitio es famoso por la canción de Thomas Moore, que tiene la siguiente letra:
"No existe en el mundo entero un valle tan dulce
Como la de aquí donde se juntan las dos aguas brillantes".
Desde aquí parte del grupo cogieron conmigo un taxi para llevarnos a Arklow donde cogimos un autobús público para Dublín. Los demás decidieron volver por el camino para coger el tren desde Rathdrum. Esta es una ruta muy fácil, apto para todos.
