Itinerary description
Ánastaðastapi is a sharp-edged rock by the sea north of the farm of Ánastaðir. At Hvalshöfði, which is a small cove between the hill and the farm, 32 large whales drifted off the sea ice in 1882 and they were killed and cut along the shore. The whaling is said to have saved many people from starvation. A sign is put up on road 711 that points to Ánastaðastapi and you walk with trampling from road 711 down to the sea and the bar is then visible. Walk north to the lighthouse and you can walk on the beach or up a hill below the lighthouse. It is also possible to walk south on the shore towards Grímsá, but that route takes about 1-2 hours depending on the speed of the hikers. The routes are comfortable and family-friendly.
