Itinerary description
This is a walk around the old (and newly restored and developed) area of Al Dhaid.
See the web links at the end for more info on the area and photos.
It starts at the new souq and passes along the Falaj (water channels) through Al Dhaid Oasis.
It takes a detour to the ruins of the watchtower (you don’t need to go beyond the end of the stone path as there’s nothing there at the moment) and back to the main path.
It then passes the old Al Shari’ah mosque.
You can go down some side paths, for example, to the Maidaq (an old resting place for the sheikhs).
Further down, there is an open-air cafe, which is open from 4-11pm and, beyond that, a turn to the Old Palace.
The building is not noteworthy but art exhibitions will be held there at times. Sharjah Biennial currently has a collection on display.
You could continue to follow my trail back to the oasis or turn right onto the asphalt road, stopping at the fruit and veg market (although this will soon move to a new site) and Souq Al Waha. From there, turn right at the roundabout and walk down the main street back to the fort or go behind Souq Al Waha.
Otherwise, the trail goes further in the oasis and back to the souq, fort/Muslim, other another souq/cafe area and around the fort to the heritage area.
Once all work is complete, there will be more options to go back on a different route and more to see.
