Itinerary description
A Sunday late January 2015, a perfect day to visit the Roman Ruins of Acinipo and to do the Route of the Highwaymen to Setenil, Cadiz. (We repeated the route ten days later with a larger group). The ruins are spectacular, and the views from there highlight one of the main reasons for selecting the place to establish a city some two thousand years ago. From here it was possible to control everything from the coast to the interior. It is also a very fertile area, and in the past had rich mineral deposits. Before the Romans there were settlements in the Bronze and Copper ages. After our visit to the Amphitheatre, the Forum and the Baths, we walked the Route of the Highwaymen which took us to Setenil. Leaving the Acinipo Parking area, some of us took a shortcut (only for experienced and equipped hikers) through the fields and farm houses to reach the road, while others took the long way around the road. We crossed the road, and began a nice series of country roadways and paths to Setenil. It is necessary to cross a stream. We had no difficulty on the Sunday, but the second time 10 days later it was necessary to build a bridge with the fallen branches from the forest. With a little more flood in the stream, it would be necessary to remove the boots. There are nice views along the route, in particular the view of Acinipo perched on the hill behind us. Setenil is a lovely village, with the peculiarity that the houses and restaurants in the old par are set into the rock formation. On the Sunday there was a Fiesta in the village, with lots of noise and packed with people, but on the Wednesday we found it quite, serene, and clean. It is a highly recommendable route and one of the best we did this year. It is some 12 km long, and without difficulty, except for the need to cross the stream. Our guide Miguel Angle of MEDUSA ADN, explained the histories of both Acinipo and Setenil de las Bodegas. Our guide: Miguel Ángel Robles, Medusa ADN.
