Itinerary description
Lund (Sweden) is an easy train trip from Copenhagen or the airport. It makes an excellent day trip if you are in Copenhagen and want to see part of Sweden. You need to take your passport as there are occaisional checks at the border, however, there was no check on the day that we went. The trip is approx 45 minutes from the airport to Lund, tickets are purchased from self-service vending machines.
Lund is an old university town and has a both old historic areas and newer more modern areas. One of the key buildings is the cathedral (Domkyrka) which dates in parts to the 12th century. The mosaics above the altar are stunning and there is also an astronomical clock that partly dates back to the 15th century, although significantly restored more recently. There is a talk (Swedish followed by English) at about 11:50 and the clock performs its procession at 12:00. The cathedral has a lot to see, make sure that you visit the crypt and look for the pillars that are ornamented and the pillars with figures.
There is an information building (with public toilets) next to the cathedral - however, we were unable to find any information about the cathedral itself in english. There is however a brochure about the rune stones. These were collected from all over Sweden and the brochure provides translations and additional information about these stones.
I have marked one of the shops that serves espresso coffee and also various pastries - make sure you try one of the cardamon ones. There were many cafes and similar throughout Lund - so you won't have a problem finding somewhere to eat. We sat in the park and enjoyed the weather with our coffee and pastries.
In Lund there is an excellent botanic garden. Worth the walk to see, and perhaps spend a little time sitting in the sun and enjoying the surroundings.
