Itinerary description
community: SINNAI
type of walk: LOOP-WALK
start & end: PARK'S VISITOR CENTER
lenght: 3,3 KM
altitude difference: 150 M
recommended age: FROM 4 YEARS
best time of year: AUTUMN, WINTER, SPRING
The walk begins at the parking area of the visitor center of the park, where the museum of the Sardinian deer is also located. Follow the road for a short while, until you come to an intersection. Turn onto trail 815 and enter the forest. On a wide trail you walk upwards. You are surrounded by oak trees, strawberry trees, wild olive trees and many other plants of the Mediterranean macchia. You follow this trail, until you have to turn off to your left. The connecting path is easy to be missed, so pay attention to find the turnoff. It is marked by a pile of stones. The red and white sign is unfortunately a bit hidden. On the right trail you walk up, until you meet another trail and a very nice and big picnic spot under some big, old oak trees.
You will now walk down into the valley of the Riu Mastinargius and the further you descend, the more present becomes the small stream. Depending on the season, the river can hold a lot of water in winter and spring, but also only a little or even none at all in summer and autumn. You are deep into the forest now, but after having passed an old wooden bridge you come to a very nice picnic area with a fire place.
Enjoy your break here and let your childen climb up trees and explore the river nearby, but be aware that making bonfires in Sardinia is only allowed from mid-October to May. Please check with the forest authorities: www.sardegnaforeste.it.
After the picnic area the path continues over another wooden bridge and shortly after that the paths splits. Take the trail on your left and walk upwards. You are now leaving the valley. You will continue on this beautiful forest trail, until you come to another intersection, which is a bit tricky. Turn left upwards and then turn immediately right again. From there it doesn’t take long and you are back on the gravel road, where you started. Walk back to the visitor center and the museum.
ENJOY THE WALK!
