Varanasi [1] (in Hindi and officially: वाराणसी AITS: Vārāṇasī) is a city located on the banks of the Ganges river in the state of Uttar Pradesh India, 320 kilometers southeast of the state capital, Lucknow, and 121 kilometers to the East of Prayagraj. It is an important religious center in India, is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism and ravidassia. Varanasi is located along National Highway 2, which connects it with Calcutta, Kanpur, Agra and Delhi, and has Varanasi Junction train station and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.
