Split is in the Dalmatia region, the nerve center of the Dalmatian coast, a city with some 200,000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by the Kozjak and Mosor mountain ranges. Split is located almost 400 km from the capital, Zagreb, and bases its economy not only on tourism, which is nourished in recent years, but also the naval industry, viticulture and numerous companies that make this city is an important administrative center.
WHAT TO SEE IN SPLIT
In the history of Split we can not overlook some data that give character to this place. The old center of this city is linked to the Roman Empire, being founded in the IV century, since the emperor Diocletian, a native of this area, built his palace to inhabit it once he retired from political life, today it is one of the best preserved Roman palaces.
The Diocletian's Palace has a square structure, typical of the Roman period. Together with its walls, which originally were 215m long by 180m, it made the monument an impenetrable place. To access the interior we can choose several doors, although normally the access is in Puerta Aurea, to continue on a street called Cardo. While we make this path we observe the residence with Italian marbles, red granite, even Egyptian sphinxes. Therefore, in 1979, UNESCO declared this palace a World Heritage Site.
EXTERIOR DIOCLECIAN PALACE IN SPLIT
Other important archaeological remains are the Temple of Jupiter and the Diocletian's Mausoleum that later became the Cathedral of San Diomo. Here we should observe the ornate altar and the Romanesque-Gothic bell tower, a mixture of styles reserved for those who love architecture. Another of the majestic works that we will see is that of the architect Buvina, who made a representation of the life of Jesus at the doors of the Cathedral.
CATHEDRAL OF SAN DIOMO IN SPLIT
Similarly we find in Split vestiges of the Middle Ages, as in the whole country, one of them is the Town Hall dating from S. XV. If you fancy a walk around the Paseo Marítimo you can see some Renaissance-style monuments such as the Republike square, which is very close to the Romanesque church of San Lorenzo and the Plaza Popolo.
No doubt this city is the ideal place to get lost as its streets are like endless streets of a labyrinth that mixes different architectural styles, and that surrounds us with the smell of sea salt, we can spend hours walking through its streets visiting the churches of San Nikola and Gospa od Zvonika, as well as some museums in the city that house works by one of the most renowned artists of Croatia, Ivan Mestrovic. Some of these buildings are the Maritime Museum that is inside a fortress of S. XVII, where we will see numerous fishing gadgets, as well as navigational charts of the time.
VENETIAN PLACE IN SPLIT
To continue learning more about the history of Split, we can visit the Archaeological Museum, one of the oldest in Croatia. It was built in 1820. The Ethnographic Museum and the Art Gallery, created in 1931, were founded in the 20th century. Without a doubt, we see that culture and art are protagonists in Split.
NATURE
If we want to access the full nature we will only take 15 minutes, from in the old town of Varos, in Marja. There you will find the Forest Park, a place with the utmost care in which we can walk, or see its zoo, from here we will see the panorama of Split in all its splendor. We can climb to the top of Telegrin, one of the highest and from there we will see the islands of Hvar, Brac, Solta and Vis, as well as cities such as Trogir.
