Opatija (Istria-Croatia) (IV)
Opatija or Abbazia is a city and a Croatian municipality located in Istria, in the background of Kvarner Bay, in Croatia. In 2001, the municipality had 12,719 inhabitants, of which 86.85% are Croats.
Sheltered from the cold winds, immersed in an evergreen vegetation, Opatija enjoys all the benefits of its mild Mediterranean climate and its beauty and elegance do not go unnoticed by the visitor. It is often called the beauty of the Adriatic, Old Lady or Queen of tourism.
In 1844 Hignio Scarpa, a patrician from Rijeka built the bay tree and the oak forests of the villa Aangiolina (it was the beginning of tourism in Opatija). Like nowhere in Europe, here the bay, the chestnut trees, palm trees grow, and in the private gardens grow kiwis, tangerines and lemons. The parks of Opatija are the result of centuries of care and donations made by sailors who came to their port.
Opatija's link to its vegetation is such that today the symbol of the city is the Japanese camellia. The goodness of its climate was attracting royal families and the Central European aristocracy who came to winter this city fleeing the climatic rigors of their countries of origin.
Since the end of the s. In the 19th century, Opatija was the health and winter center par excellence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the First World War, and many luxurious old hotels are still standing as a reminder of the past splendor. Here they passed great seasons monarchs like Francisco José I, the musician Gustav Mahler, Isadora Duncan, or AP Chekhov, among others).
At that time it was known as the "Austrian Nice". The first hotel in the city dates from 1840. However, the holiday resort was built after it was suggested in 1859 by Dr. Juraj Matija Sporer, the creation of a partnership for the exploitation of Opatija from the benefits of stays at sea. to health. The initial project provided only 120 chalets. The first two luxury hotels - the "Kvarner" and the "Impérial" - opened in 1885. The famous dancer Isadora Duncan had appreciated the city and there found inspiration in "the grace of the tremble of the leaves of the palm trees in the wind of the morning".
One of the most famous and recognizable symbols of Opatija is a girl with a seagull. Before 1956 there was in its place a statue of the Madonna Del Mare to watch over the soul of Count Arthur Kesselstadt that was lost at sea during a storm in 1891.
