Itinerary description
Great day out.
Moderate Via Ferrata (1 hour 30 mins - 2 hours). Solid scrambling, but not too technical or exposed.
Went off the path for a few hundred metres on the approach to the Ferrata, after I left the main marble quarry.
Walk along the Capradossa ridge is again moderate and not exposed if you walk to the left of the ridge.
Path up to Pizzo d'Uccello is marked (per esperti - for experts). However, I'm not an expert climber and encountered only several steep sections where scrambling was required.
Great views to the sea, of monte Pisanino and the Alpi Appennini from the top.
On the way down, about 400 metres from the end, I got hit by a thunderstorm and was slightly lost on the path. Lots of fallen trees across the path at the end, so take care not to make a wrong turn.
I parked in a side cutting by the barrier, giving plenty of room to any lorries that might need access to the quarry. However, I met one of the drivers at the end who politely told me that if my car was any further out in the road, I would have blocked the access. He advised me to next time park in one of the lay-bys further away from the barrier.
The access road from Ugliancaldo is unpaved, but not so rough if taken slowly. I was in a small car, not a 4x4. I tried to get there early in the morning (before 6am) to avoid any oncoming trucks from the quarry as there is little room to pass.
Please ring the number indicated before entering the quarry - it's a working quarry and they do blast.
Total time 7hours 36 mins with breaks and including time at the beginning and end when I went slightly off-piste.
Thank you to others for the base route, on which this route is based.
