Ascent to Mangart, in the Julian Alps, between Slovenia and Italy.
We arrive at the Mangart road and shortly after its beginning there is a toll: 10 euros per car. It is advisable to arrive at the barrier before 8 in the morning in summer. Upstairs there is parking but limited.
The first thing is to overcome a barrier (1,890 meters above sea level) and continue along the track, until it begins to go down again and you have to climb a path towards a pass (2,140 meters above sea level). We could still walk to the top here, but we took the Italian via ferrata. To do this you have to go down to the other side. We see below a refuge (Bivacco Nogara, 1900 masl) and a small heliport. We can go down there and then ascend towards the via ferrata or take a path halfway up the slope towards the beginning of the via ferrata.
Further down are the Lakes of Fusine.
The route has about 20 sections of towpath, divided into three parts. The first starts soft, goes into a cavity and has some pretty exposed parts. The sections are A, A/B, B and at most B/C.
After the first part we find a small plateau where you can walk or rest.
The second part starts out quite exposed, C and then B/C, A and B.
It ends very close to the normal route. At this point you can descend and take the Slovenian via ferrata that almost reaches the top. It's easier: A, B and at most A/B.
But we keep going up.
The third section of the Italian via ferrata is easy: A and B.
It ends and now it remains to ascend the "normal" route, which, after a rocky area and for the most part, is equipped like a via ferrata, with steel ropes, but that people use without via ferrata equipment, only with their hands.
Further up we continue climbing along the path that leads us to the top (2,679 m).
We went entirely down the normal route.
