Itinerary description

A slow but scenic way to get to Madrid from Segovia. We had to go on sunday as it was the only day the train set off at a reasonable time for us, 10.42 am. During the week the only morning train is before 8.00 am. The old station is quite run down, hardly surprising with the opening of the high speed AVANT which only takes 28 min and has a separate station 4 km out of town. We returned using the AVANT. Smooth as silk but in tunnels about half the time. There is a bus service (2 Euros) to town as well as the usual taxis (Bonus for them). We paid 16.60 Euros return. 6.60 old train, 10.30 AVANT. We got the train from Madrid Chamartin to Atocha in the centre of Madrid. (1.70 Euros each). Note: on the slow train the seats were basic (English 'Pacer style') and there are NO toilets. However you need to change at Cercedilla so you have a few minutes there.
Getting information from the internet to travel in Madrid was hopeless. Information from staff was much better. Apologies for the Photographs.

Site of a major rail marshalling yard. Grafiti, although bad in the UK, seems almost encouraged in Spain.

Change trains here. Chance to go to the toilet but not much time. Here you can take the narrow gauge train to the mountains, as far as Puerto de Cotos. I would guess this was built for the ski resorts.

Segovia

As you can see by the sleepers, a bit run down. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
