Itinerary description
"When Mount Vesuvius blew its top in AD 79 it buried the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum under its deadly pyroclastic flow. The volcano remains feisty: it's erupted around thirty times since the 1st century AD and will likely do so again. So don't put off a ride on the Circumvesuviana Railway's 47 km Naples Sorrento line. It leaves from the lively port of Naples and calls at both of the ill fated Roman cities, where you can walk amid villas bathhouses and brothels excavated from beneath the ash. The line continues rpound the Bay of Naples to the lemon-scented clifftop town of Sorrento, with Vesuvius brooding behind."
