Today we begin to travel the route of the Chilkoot Pass, on the Canadian side. The American part is closed (in 2023), due to floods that have brought down several bridges along the way. Since it is not possible to cover the entire route, we are going to go up to the pass and go down again along the same path. Less is nothing.
We start from Bennett, which is actually the last stage if the route is taken in its usual sense, from the United States to Canada. To get there, they take us by van to Carcross, where we get on a train that takes us to the start.
Carcross is a small Canadian town, and the last leg of the Yukon Trail by train. The route starts from Skagway, in Alaska, the population at sea level from which we would have started the Chilkoot Route if that slope had not been closed.
The train was built after the appearance of gold in the Klondike. The gold rush attracted thousands of prospectors, who entered the Yukon through two points: Chilkoot Pass or White Pass. This train was built to take advantage of that rush, and it was planned to go through White Pass. After overcoming many logistical and financial problems, in 1900 it ended up in Carcross. The business did not last long, because the gold rush ended almost immediately. Today the train survives as a tourist attraction.
The interior of the train is very well preserved, in an old plan. It is nice. We will only travel to the next station, Bennett, from which we will start the path. The route surrounds the lake of the same name.
Other travelers usually go all the way, but at this station the train stops for a while so people can get out and take a walk along the beginning of the route.
During the trip, the driver announces over the public address system if he discovers a bear, so that we have the opportunity to see it as we go by. He reported three times, but we only got to see one on one occasion. I didn't see it, but some of my classmates did.
It is not that it is a very exciting trip, but it does not last too long and it is not excessively heavy.
Finally, we end up arriving at Bennett, where we get off, grab our duffel bags and start walking towards the Chilkoot.
