Started hike on gated part of FS278 next to the bald. Hiked east and turned around after about 3 1/2 miles. Saw big timber rattler.
Forest service double track road. Go up FS 189 (gravel double track) about 0.5 miles. Gated at entrance of FS 189A. No evidence of ATV use on 189A. Nice surface for hiking, biking. Not badly overgrown and few blow downs....
