Itinerary description
One of the most beautiful mountain stretches in the Western Cape. Groot-Winterhoek Peak is climbed very seldom and provides a view over the Boland, Swartland, Cederberg, Bokkeveld and even the Karroo. On a clear day Elandsbay, Table Mountain and the Hexriver mountains can be seen. This specific track does not include the easiest decent from Groot-Winterhoek but follows an interesting scramble route down marked with kerns. The accent from Sneeugat up to Klein-Winterhoek Peak is worth the while. We blindly followed a line down to Saron which is not the best option, especially the steep accent from the mountain before the orchards are reached. A better option would be to exit Klein-Winterhoek on the Tulbach side. Most of this route is not on a path and water is only guaranteed before the accent to Groot-Winterhoek and in Sneeugat. There was no water on the accent to Klein-Winterhoek Peak when we did the route in September. This is not an official route and permission from landowners is required.
