Itinerary description
This is a quick winter hike up to Mt. Nokogiri ~ 1000m that takes about 2h:30m in fresh snow, with a trail run down a logging road back to Oku-tama ~ 2h . It is a makeshift route based on the conditions at the time.
There was lots of deer and bear tracks in the snow further up to the summit - which has a few tricky climbs aided by chains and ladders.
Once at the peak have a snack on a bench and head back to the junction you past 5 minutes prior and take a left to the stairs which leads to a logging road with soft shoulders (and an old outhouse) that was a clear open running decline back to Oku-tama. This road had beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and waterways of the area.
I did this hike in trail runners (Saucony Xodus ISO 2) - with a pair of poles. Even with double wool socks my feet were feeling the chill of -8'C while hiking but once i hit the road and started running i was fine.
If I had my boots I would have gone on to the locations below---->
***In better conditions from the summit of Mt. Nokogiri you could hike west along the ridge to Mt. Gozenyama and through to Oku-tama friendship center OR South East to Mt. Odake through to Mt.Mitake- both would be full day trips - and would finish around sundown if you took the first rapid service train from Shinjuku on the weekends at 6:45am. Don't get stuck on a mountain in the dark if you haven't planned to be there. ***
