Roy's Peak Summit, Wanaka NZ
1578m height. Best views ever, cannot recommend enough if you're up for it whilst in Wanaka. This hike does not disappoint.
Start 1.00pm. How's that for irresponsible? Woohoo!
Finish 4.07pm.
Time to reach top: 1hr 53mins
Time to descend to carpark: 1hr 7mins.
4km run back to hotel.
Jelly legs at end? Definitely.
This trail is very wide for tourists, and was quite slushy in numerous parts due to ice melting so a lot of care needed not to slip and dirty yourself everywhere. I took whatever shortcuts I could find to speed up my ascent and have more grip than the mushy trail. I took the trails the locals take... the sheep, and they made many for me to follow.
It is rated 6-7 hrs return so I thought I was pushing it with a 1pm start time (I am an irresponsible hiker after all!)... However I was very surprised to see peeps still going up as I was descending down (about 1/4 way up, people crazier than me were making their way upwards about at 3.30pm)! Darkness descends about 5.30pm, was already freezing and there were still tons of people up the mountain, and still going up. Well, everyone learns one way or another... 🤪
