Itinerary description
This is a highly scenic route but it was done May 5 2018 with hazy weather and clouds from 1400 metres and above (in Rigi Kulm less than 20 metre visibility).
Moving time was 4h48min, so about 40 mins added for stops, fotos, eating/drinking.
It follows established walking paths (Wanderwege). Proper trail shoes recommended even in summer as some sections can be slippery if it has rained recently.
We start off in Küssnacht am Rigi train station and follow the Wanderweg past the lake downtown area and following signs for Rigi Külm-Seebodenalp.
The uphill path to the top of Rigi is at best a fast hike. Poles help going up.
From Rigi Staffel to Kulm path is hard surface and plenty of tourists.
I did a small detour to Chänzelli following the ridge that faces the Vierwaldstättersee and Zugersee. On clear days, you get very nice views.
The Kaltbad section is probably unnecessary (unless you want to go to Scheiddegg) but there was poor visibility and I wanted to get to a known route down to Goldau.
The route to Goldau is uncomplicated and with fairly pretty views of Rossberg/Gnipen/Wildspitz. The last 3 or so km into Goldau go through an asphalted route.
In Goldau train station you can get some food and drink and then continue following signs for Ruffiberg/Gnipen/Wildspitz.
(Now, I intended to go to Wildspitz but was tired and cut it short at the crossing where Ruffiberg was signalled. From there it's all basically flat over the Zugerberg).
One goes past the Montana School (n.b. at the beginning of the dormitories, there is a tiny panoramic path of maybe 200 metres with nice views over the Zugersee. It is in this track).
Then follow signs for Blasenberg, and from there down there is a very pretty downhill into Zug, with very nice views over Zug and Zugersee.
The track has a couple of imperfections. GPS signal was lost going up towards Rufiberg in dense vegetation a couple of times, and there some works in Goldau that meant a small detour from the Wanderweg.
