Itinerary description
This is an out of this world trail. Spectacular. The Klif summit (telecom antennas) I recommend do not climb it and go straight down to the harbour, it’s in terrible condition and you’ll disturb sea gulls nesting. Also, if you get lose a big rock, I think it can roll down to the harbour and hit someone or sink a boat.. It’s simply not worth it compared with the rest of the trail and summits which are amazingly beautiful.
Did it light with trail running shoes but the day was dry. With rain I’d recommend climbing shoes.
I don’t want to exaggerate but there are sections which are very aerial and you have to be very careful. If you mind your steps and are not apprehensive of the heights, nothing to worry about but pure joy!
Thanks to @Toppfarar and @Gussler for sharing this amazing trail
About the ancient cross carved on the stone:
The Cross in Heimaklettur
The cross, commonly called the Papa Cross, is patted on the tuff just inside the sign and is clearly visible behind the stairs. The cross is one of the oldest religious symbols that is still visible in this country in its original place in Icelandic nature. Recent research suggests that the cross is a so-called winter solstice cross. Such crosses always point to the southwest and the sun falls on the cross when it is lowest in the air in late December. There was a great weekend on such crosses in the past and the cross on Heimaklettur is the oldest that can still be seen shaping.
Walk carefully and be careful.
