Itinerary description
Done in 4hr 9 minute moving time at average moving speed of a little over 7.5kmh, so very relaxed rythym, taking pictures and enjoying views.
The 4 Seen Wanderung is a classic touristy hike.
The advantage is that you do not have to do the full course and you have many places to cut your route short. You have a cable car that can take you all the way to Jochpass and down to Engstlenalp in addition to a cable car that can take you from Melchsee Frutt down to Stockalp.
The first ascent is step with a lot of trail switchbacks. The steepest section is the first one until Trübsee. It is forested and can be a little wet. The next section to Jochpass does not have trees and it is less steep with wider Switchbacks. It will be a fast hike until Jochpass from there you can run all the way down to Melchtal.
I have spiced it up a little. From Engelberg to Tannensee it is the standard route (Trübsee, Jochpass, Engstlensee, Engstlenalp). This section is all Route 1 (via Alpina).
Once reaching Tannensee we take the paths to our right that pick up extra height and overlook Tannensee and Melchsee Frutt. We take them until we get to the ridge that will lead us to Bonistock.
This way you are higher and have views to both sides.
The path from Melchsee Frutt to Stockalp is an old cattle path and from Stockalp we just go through cow grazing meadows parallel to the river.
To note that the busses from Melchtal (or generally in the valley) go by once an hour so you may want to plan your times or you'll have a longish wait until the Post bus arrives.
