Agailiai Chapel

The first wooden chapel in the depths of the Agailiai forest was built during the slavery period. Participants of the 1863 uprising were also buried next to it. According to the old inhabitants, serfs beaten to death were buried near the Agailiai chapel in Klaišiai manor. 2004-2005 The Kuršėnai forest enterprise renovated the Agailiai church at its own expense, installed a platform for events, built benches, and tidied up the environment.

Alytus Pedestrian Bridge - 'White Rose'

The tallest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Lithuania was built in 2015 on the surviving cups of the former railway bridge, entered in the Lithuanian record book. Its height is 38.1 m, length is 260 m. The author of the project is V. Karieta. In the second half of the 19th century, strengthening the western borders of the Russian Empire (at that time Lithuania belonged to its territory), a military railway was built to Alytus as a class III fortress. In 1897–1899, a bridge with an innovative cantilever structure (author of the project N. Beleliubskis) was built in this place, with a height of 33 m and a length of 240.5 m. The carriageway of the bridge was intended for train and carriage traffic. During World War I, in 1915, the retreating tsarist army blew up the bridge. The Germans who occupied Alytus built a temporary wooden military railway bridge in its place. Its height was 35 m, length - 294 m. The bridge served until 1926 and was later dismantled. August 2013 construction of a new three-stage suspension bridge began. Construction of the bridge was completed in October 2015. The bridge was officially opened on June 4, 2016.

Augustaičiai water mill

The current Augustaičiai water mill was built in 1932, but the mill was already standing in this place at the end of the 19th century. The brick building was erected after the burning of the former wooden one and belonged to Papilė's businessman Vilkas until the Second World War. The mill's equipment was powered by the current of the Venta River, but in the long run it was equipped with a diesel engine - so that, if necessary, it could be ground both during the summer drought and during the winter, when the water in the river decreases. There is a surviving water turbine, two mills, a Swedish grit blasting machine, pickles, a Swedish transmission, a wooden ferry to move cargo. The mill has been declared a technical monument of local significance. Next to the mill is Algirdas Martyšius stud farm.

Birštonas observation tower

In order to feel like a bird in flight and see the diversity of the landscape, we will have to climb the Birštonas observation tower - the tallest tower in Lithuania. The location of the tower was chosen back in 1997, when the Government of the Republic of Lithuania approved the planning scheme of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park. The planning scheme is the main document setting out the measures for the conservation, management and proper use of this unique site. Even then, it was dreamed of an observation tower where one would be able to understand the beauty and uniqueness of one’s environment. The location of the tower was chosen on the Škėvonys ridge, in a sparsely urbanized area, 92 m above sea level. The Nemunas River flows here for 240 meters, the open field in the south-eastern part, next to the forest, the panorama of Birštonas, the Nemunas Valley can be seen, the homesteads of Birštonas (now the territory of Birštonas city) stretch for 900 meters.

Blade limestone quarry

As early as 1932. Limestone for the production of lime and the sugar industry began to be excavated in the blades. Now part of the excavated quarry is flooded, there are artificial lakes that wash away the remaining limestone outcrops. The shores of flooded lakes are richly overgrown with tall grasses and shrubs. A common white-flowered barnacle forms grasslands in places, a blue-flowered vetch is found in places, and so on. Visitors to the quarry are struck by the image, reminiscent of the pink Grand Canyon of America.

Clay quarry in Šaltiškiai

Five kilometers northeast of Papilė, in the village of Šaltiškės, there is a quarry of Šaltiškės clay. In Early Triassic times, 250 million ago. years, there was a desert climate. Alluvial sediments then accumulated in the foggy plains. Over millions of years, with the decay of biotite and hornbeam minerals, iron was released, giving these layers a red color. According to scientists, the images resemble panoramas of Mars space stations.

Dengtiltis - water mill

The first water mills in Lithuania appeared in the 14th century. Grain milling was a good business, so for more than a century mills were the privilege of mansions and towns. It was only after the abolition of slavery (1861) that they spread on peasant farms. In Lithuania, water mills were mostly wooden, they almost always housed the miller's living quarters. The water mill was rotated by water flowing under a circle of water (lower action) or running on a wheel (upper action) or to the side of a wheel (middle action). At the beginning of the 20th century, the wheels of the mills were replaced by turbines in some places. The construction of water mills in the upper reaches of the Dubysa began after the uprising of 1831, with the collapse of the Venta-Dubysa overpass. At the end of the 19th century, the energy of the river in these areas was used by the mills of Dengtilis, Mirskiškės, Bernotai and Burkšiai, and the Bubiai sawmill.
