Itinerary description
Snowshoeing - Rifugio Bagnour sits on the edge of the homonym lake. Just a shallow pond but enchanting in summer, while it's invisible in winter as it's covered with snow. Not a real marsh, it's bound to become a peat bog in a few thousands years.
The Rifugio is open daily during summer months, and on weekends year-round.
Despite abundant snow, the trail was only partially covered as it faces south and the warm sun of recent days took its toll. Most, if not all, of the steep trail through the woods was solid ice all the way, not requiring snowshoes but crampons instead.
The Bosco dell'Aleve' (Aleve' Woods) is the largest virgin forest of Pino Cembro, or Cirmolo [Pinus cembra] in the Alps and, possibly, in the whole of Europe.
Oldest specimen have been estimated at over 650 years of age. Aleve' is the word for such tree species in local Occitan language.
