Itinerary description
To start, the trail is densely forested. Our destination if Flora Lake which I have hiked to many times, always in the summer. With the thick trees and snow-covered ground, we quickly lose the signage that indicates the trails summer route. We end up following in the tracks that others have laid before us knowing that the first part of the trail roughly parallels the freeway before turning south first to Azalea Lake and then to Flora.
With every step we take, the sound of Interstate 80 fades further away until it is hard to distinguish the sounds of passing traffic from the gusts of wind.
Even though the day is overcast with broken clouds, I am struck by a mix of colors present — white of freshly fallen snow, green moss clinging to bark of trees, dark gray and black patches of the exposed granite. A great beginners snow shoe event
