Cascada Cailor is located near the resort town of Borșa, in the northeastern part of the Rodna Mountains. The water collected in a glacial cirque flows over a limestone cliff called ˝Podul Cailor˝, in several passages, creating the largest waterfall in Romania. It is located at an altitude of 1300m and the water fall is 90m. The waterfall can be accessed from several directions, from the Borșa-Complex by chairlift, or on foot, or from the highest areas of the Rodna Mountains [1] [2].
The legend
EDIT
It is said that Mount Piatra Rea was the favorite place for the inhabitants of the area to raise their stallions of horses from spring to autumn, the reason is simple: the pastures are of a beauty and richness that are difficult to find in other places, thus, the horses could graze freely without being disturbed. But since the stories are ultimately not pretty, it is said that the stallions of the horses were attacked by the bears, who were hungry and sought food in the flesh of the horses. Being an open place, the bear's chances of success were slim. But the bear, being an intelligent animal as he is known, found solutions and cornered the animals over the precipice beside what is now called Horse Falls. Thus, being trapped in a narrow place, the poor animals had no more chances and fell prey to the bear.
Since then, locals have named this waterfall as the horse waterfall, due to this legend. Together with this waterfall, the whole area was renamed, the neighboring mountain was called Horse Mountain, the cirque was also called Horse Bridge. In order for the whole landscape to bear this name, the stream flowing in the valley is also called Izvorul Cailor.
